There are a number of fundamental questions every person who is fortunate enough to have citizenship in the United States of America ought to ask and have a solid answer for:
1. what is the role of government?
2. what is the relationship between the citizen and his/her government?
3. what are my rights and responsibilities as a citizen of the United States?
4. what are the core principles upon which this nation was built?
5. what are the fundamental truths found in the Declaration of Independence and in the Constitution of the United States.
6. what is a democracy?
7. what is a republic?
8. what is the nature of government?
9. what is the nature of mankind?
10. what are my priorities and values?
11. what is more important (especially those priorities and values) than life itself?
12. how do I fit into this world; what is my role in the march of history?
13. what is my purpose relative to my family, my community, my country and mankind?
These are just a few of the essential matters we must wrestle with. Yes, these were addressed back in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries but they must be readdressed by every generation -or we will lose the most amazing priveledges and political freedoms any nation on earth has ever known. How many fathers and mothers across this nation speak of such things with their children over dinner or in the quiet hours of the day? It is almost absurd to ask if fathers and mothers are even talking to their children about any serious thing (except of course about condom use and environmental degradation... what have we come to).
